Saurus is the Latest Software. Those who like to play on synthesizers know the cost of buying the real deal, so they usually opt for the default version. The problem is that even seasoned users and mixing enthusiasts can tell the difference in sound between the digital and analog versions of the device. However, now and then, there’s a digital synthesizer that makes this difference seem fuzzy enough to be worth buying rather than the real thing, and one such synth is the Saurus. From a visual standpoint, the Saurus is a pleasant surprise for any veteran user of the boat, as it is designed to look like the real thing. The buttons and dials all have a metallic glow while being accompanied by a matte black background and dark wood finishes.

As for audio, the app successfully delivers what it promises, as the overall realistic analog look is accompanied by true analog audio. Even the sound of keypresses sounds organic enough to forget you’re pressing a mouse button and not an ivory or ebony key. All thanks to the original simulation of analog structures provided by True-Analog-Modeling-Technology. Saurus offers everything you could want in a synthesizer, from a variety of oscillators to filters, frequency tuning, echo effects, an analog filter with self-oscillation, FM, and a powerful sound and feedback modulator. This complete package allows Saurus to replace a large number of expensive analog synthesizers, delivering great value for money, all while having a lower CPU while still providing high-quality sound. The Saurus covers all aspects of the most popular and expensive synthesizers, but without flaws, making it along with all other synthesizers from the same developer a great option to consider.

Saurus Features:

user interface

As you might expect, the front of the Saurus is designed to look like a nice old synth strewn with knobs, right down to the dust on the keyboard (a nice touch). Everything is easy to read and laid out and should be fairly familiar to anyone with a background in subtractive synthesis.

The top left of the interface hosts the debug browser. Here you can increase the volume by sound, choose sounds from the drop-down list, switch banks (which are organized by category), and configure sounds (or just a sound arranger or mod array. You can also load sounds manually from another drive here.

I have to admit that when I first started looking at the presets, my first thought was, “Okay, that sounds like a Tone2 synth.” Now, I’m a fan of their earlier machines, so this is a compliment. What I didn’t hear, though, was those analog vibes they sought to replicate. On the contrary, many of the sounds sounded like standard virtual analogs to my ears.

It wasn’t until I spent some time tuning that the analog nature began to reveal itself. This is a synthesis that is very capable of creating a convincing analog emulation, but it can also override that, unfortunately for Tone2, I think more of their presets fall into this “out” category than the convincing analog audio. Don’t get me wrong, patches for non-analog audio sound great, but I think it would be a wiser decision to restrict factory presets for sounds that sound outdated versus things that are closer to viruses.

The Saurus filter is the real star of the show in my opinion. The low-pass filter in particular has the poor squeak quality of the MS-20 and the drive can boost the tuning sound. The oscillators sound good, although they still sound too perfect for my ears. There’s a “live” quality to the oscillators in FXpansion’s Strobe or u-it’s DIVA that I don’t hear here. Perhaps it would be useful here to have more control over the amount of deficiency.

The mod possibilities are generous and open up a lot of interesting possibilities for enthusiastic programmers. The effects are simple, but they look good and can add some dimension to the sounds. It might be nice to see some of the old writing effects here like a phaser or pulsating reverb.

Saurus

Positives:

Some delicious wave shape options; Lots of cold modification possibilities; LFOs can be pushed into the sound range; Fantastic host department. Not too hard on the CPU…

Negatives:

But not all that light either; Effects parameters cannot be modified.

Conclusion:

Soros is proof that your first impressions are not always correct. The abundance of modern sounding presets bore Saurus with misleading me into believing that this was just another bog standard hypothetical counterpart. If you know what you’re doing, you’ll find that there are plenty of compelling analog tones here just waiting to be discovered. How does it compare to other competitors such as Strobe or Diva? I’d say it’s not on par with those two, but it’s pretty good, cheaper than either, and less damaging to the CPU. If you just want a pre-made instrument that will give you a lot of old tunes, you might consider looking elsewhere, but if you want to program your sounds, you should give them a demo. Programming is so much fun!
