Positives:
It’s a comprehensive package that contains all the tools you could need while rebuilding photogrammetry, DSM, DTM, and portrait scanning work. It can plan the optimal flight pattern for the next survey of the same area, which is a huge plus if you’re scanning in detail for complex buildings and regions. The ease of use and the support in their forums are also great.
Negatives:
A bit on the expensive side for people, if you need geo-referenced output – which you probably will. Automatic classification can sometimes be hit and miss – highly dependent on the quality of the input data.
Conclusion:
When I first reviewed Photo scan, it was solid, but some of the free software available gave it a run for its money. But Agisoft has made really big strides — it’s improved speed, polishing, and toolkit significantly, and Metashape, like Photo scan before it, remains the least expensive commercial software on the market, especially with such an educational discount.
It’s hard not to recommend Photo scans to anyone. Capturing reality might make it faster, but Capture Reality costs more per month than Metashape total (at least with an educational discount), and still limits the number of photos. The 3DF Zephyr is good but again limits the image number to the same kind of price we find in the standard edition from Metashape. Mushroom is free, but it’s nowhere near as fast as Metashape. I’m pretty tight, and I’m fine using Mushroom, but frankly, there’s a clear show of value in purchasing a Metashape.
